Let's get back to the FMPMU's roots and go a little Indie this week. Leading off is the first band to sign with Jack Johnson's Bushfire records, from Santa Barbara here is ALO with "Try";
These guys (really just one person and a bunch of rotating studio / session artists) have been feature on numerous soundtracks, everything from Shrek (actually all three Shrek movies) to American Beauty here are the Eels - "Novocaine For Soul"

Down Under edition! Here's a band that I've featured before on this blog but if my records are correct never on the FMPMU (which is odd). Though they've only had one minor hit here in the US, they're huge in their native Australia. Of the new album "So Many Nights" here is The Cat Empire with the title track, "So Many Nights";
Another Aussie favorite, Midnight Oil, might be one of the most socially conscious bands in the world. From their first album (1982's excellent "10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1,") to their disbandment in 2002, they worked tirelessly for Aboriginal rights in Australia as well countless environmental causes. There are a lot of great songs in their catalog to pick from, but I'm going to go off that first album because it still has relevance some 27 years later, this is "Read About It"

Grab your pork pie hat, it's time for a Ska edition of the FMPMU! To start things off here is a group that, in addition to putting out great music, makes excellent videos. Off the album "Monkeys For Nothin' and The Chimps For Free" it's Reel Big Fish and "Party Down";
Speaking of groups that made great videos, these guys might have been the best in the 80's. Madness made so many great videos (and songs) that it's hard to pick just one, but how about we get just a little obscure? Here is "Tomorrow's (Just Another Day)"

By now you may have read about Chuck Norris and Glenn Beck's desire to secede from the Union (if not an excellent primer is located here). Obviously, talk of armed revolt is not only treasonous, but it's down right stupid. Allow me to explain...
In the Norris fantasy (warning! link contains powerful wingnut), Texas is the heart of the secession, so let's give him that. He also believes that "some in the military" will join their movement, so let's give him an unbelievably high number and say 25% will join him (honestly, they'd be lucky to get 5%, but I'm willing to give them a chance). So they've got a "country" of about 24.5 million people (compare to the USA at 301 million), but now the real questions start;
What about resources - Texas is currently the nations leading cattle producer, which would mean beef prices would go up. They also have a fair amount of oil, about 1/4 of our total capacity. After that comes commercial fishing, which would probably be contested now since they wouldn't be part of the US. The state of Texas is also a major technology and commerce hub, but both sectors would undoubtedly migrate to maintain their business ties to the rest of the world.
Speaking of the rest of the world, who would their allies be - When the secessionist of the Confederacy made their attempt they had hoped that Britain and France would step in. Texas would have no such hope. In fact, they could pretty much count out any of the US allies (who's a bigger trading partner, the US or Texas?). The best they could probably hope for would be countries that wanted to harm the US (North Korea, Cuba, maybe a very quiet China), but that wouldn't look good would it? Nope, they'd be pretty alone, which would be a problem considering the above paragraph.
Then there would be their economy - Even assuming that Texas could get some kind of recognition (and that's a HUGE assumption), they've got no real basis for an economy. They might have minimal assest to back a currency at the start, but as the Confederacy found out, that runs out very quickly.
In short, like most wingnut fantasies and B-movies, it wouldn't work even if they wanted it to. Mr. Norris, if you and your little band of friends don't like the current government, work to change it. If you don't like the current plan, come up with a better one. But until that time, shut the fuck up becuase this isn't "Invasion USA" and nobody is waiting for you to come to the "rescue".

Scott Horton at Harper's Magazine has an outstanding piece on the so-called "Bush Memos" that is well worth a read, but here's the kicker (and I couldn't agree with him more);
If you'd like to read a further, and slightly more legal look at the issue, Jack Balkin has an equally excellent write up as well;
"This theory of presidential power argues, in essence, that when the President acts in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief, he may make his own rules and cannot be bound by Congressional laws to the contrary. This is a theory of presidential dictatorship."

Woohoo! I just got cleared to get back on the bike! My PT still wants me to limit my time to 30 minutes or so every other day, but I can get back to riding and seriously training again, no more just spinning while sitting upright.
If there's been one bright spot to this whole thing it's really made me fired up to get back to riding. I don't dread the trainer like I used to, now I'm looking forward to it. I've still got a long way to go, but I feel like at least I'm moving forward now.
